Opahu Stream - Hutt City
The Opahu Stream (commonly known as Black Creek) begins near Boulcott Street, meanders through the central city and flows into the Hutt River at Whites Line West. The stream is the natural drainage channel for this area and covers the area between the banks, including the stream bed and the adjacent flood plain.
During low rainfall the flow of water is contained within the stream bed. However, during moderate to heavy rainfall, the stream may overflow onto the flood plain.
What is the Council responsible for?
Hutt City Council is responsible for maintaining the stream bed and culverts under the streets. Council's maintenance programme includes inspecting the entire length of the stream generally in October, January and April each year to identify maintenance requirements. Work required usually involves clearing stream beds of week growth, trimming overhanging branches and removing accumulated rubbish.
What can residents do to help maintain the stream?
Many residents already maintain the stream that runs through their properties, by removing debris and obstructions. Accordingly, little or no assistance from Council is required. By working together both Council and residents can ensure that the stream continues to enhance our environment, and any potential for flooding is minimised.
If you require further clarification or would like to learn more about the stream, contact Hutt City Council on 570 6666.
